Ghana: Vibrant life in the shadow of history

Cape Coast castles and I spent a day in Cape Coast, Ghana to visit two preserved slave Castles. The history of slaving on this coast is grim and emotionally painful for Africans as well as others. The most striking part of this area is the contrast between the looming white castles as a constant reminder of where unimaginable inhumanity existed and the vibrant, teeming life of the people in the town. The noise, the hum and the spirit of the people fills the spaces outside the walls of the castles with color, hope and life. The boats go out to sea at 5:30 AM and return at 5:30 PM, just before sunset. In the evening I watched some villagers come into the castle to draw their water from the original well. The festive atmosphere in sight of the "Door of No Return" seemed to symbolize the ability of humans to move ahead but not forget the past. The Ghana motto is "Forward ever, Backward never." I put more pictures of life than of the castles. I hope you love this town as much as I did.
